After travelling through Thailand, Phuket gave us exactly what we needed: a few days to slow down, enjoy the sunshine and create memories together. But this island is about much more than beaches. From meeting rescued elephants to stepping into a world of lights at Carnival Magic, Phuket surprised us in the best possible way.

Arriving in Phuket: Thailand with a tropical twist

Compared to some of Thailand’s smaller islands, Phuket feels bigger, busier and more international. The island has everything you need for a comfortable family holiday: beautiful beaches, good restaurants, family-friendly hotels and countless activities.
That convenience is one of the reasons Phuket works so well with children. You can have a relaxing beach day one moment and be exploring Thai culture or wildlife the next.
The key is choosing the right area. Patong is famous for its nightlife and busy atmosphere, while Kata Beach and Karon Beach offer a much more relaxed family vibe. If you prefer peace and nature, the northern part of the island is a wonderful option.
For us, Phuket was not about ticking off every attraction. It was about enjoying the little moments: swimming together, trying new food and discovering what makes Thailand so special.

A magical elephant experience in Phuket

One of the highlights of our time in Phuket was meeting elephants.
Elephants are one of Thailand’s most iconic animals, and seeing them up close is something children (and adults!) will never forget. But choosing the right elephant experience is incredibly important.
We wanted an experience where the elephants were respected and cared for. No elephant riding, no shows and no activities where animals are forced to perform. Instead, we chose a responsible sanctuary where we could learn about the elephants, help prepare food and watch them in a more natural environment.
Standing next to such a huge and gentle animal is a magical feeling. Their size is impressive, but it is their calm personality that really stays with you.
Watching our children feed the elephants and seeing their excitement was one of those travel moments where you know you have created a memory that will last forever.

We weren’t quite sure what to expect, but from the moment we arrived, we stepped into a completely different world. Think of a combination of a carnival, theme park, cultural show and a festival of lights — all created on a spectacular scale.

The highlight of the evening is the spectacular parade, filled with incredible costumes, music, dancers and impressive performances. The creativity and detail are amazing, and children will be completely fascinated.
For our family, this was one of those evenings where everyone was simply enjoying the moment. No rushing, no travel planning — just walking around with big smiles and enjoying the magic.

Of course, Phuket wouldn’t be Phuket without spending time on the beach.

Kata Beach

Kata Beach was one of our favourite places to relax. The atmosphere is friendly, the water is beautiful and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. It is a great choice for families who want a balance between comfort and a tropical island feeling.

Karon Beach

Karon is slightly quieter and has a beautiful long stretch of sand. It is perfect for families who love space to play, swim and enjoy sunset walks.

Exploring hidden beaches

One of the best things about Phuket is that you don’t have to stay in the busiest areas. Renting a car or hiring a private driver allows you to discover smaller beaches and viewpoints away from the crowds.

Discover Old Phuket Town

After all the beach time, Old Phuket Town feels like stepping into another side of the island.
The colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings, small cafés, local shops and street art make it a wonderful place to wander around. It is also a great spot to taste local snacks and experience a more authentic side of Phuket.

Absolutely.
Phuket may be one of Thailand’s more popular destinations, but that also means it is incredibly convenient for families. There are activities for every age, beautiful beaches, amazing food and unforgettable experiences.
For us, Phuket was not just a beach destination. It was the place where adventure and relaxation came together.
Meeting elephants. Watching Carnival Magic light up the night. Swimming in warm tropical water. Sharing Thai food together.
Those are the moments that make family travel special.
