Verona with Kids: Falling in Love with Italy’s Most Charming City
There are cities that impress you, and then there are cities that quietly steal your heart. Verona is definitely the second.
We expected it to be a beautiful stop on our way through northern Italy. A place to visit for a few hours, take some photos and continue our journey.
Instead, we found ourselves wandering through charming cobbled streets, eating the creamiest gelato, discovering hidden squares and wondering why more families don’t put Verona higher on their Italy travel list.
Because Verona has everything we love about Italy.
Beautiful architecture. Incredible history. Amazing food. A relaxed atmosphere. And just enough adventure to keep children interested too. It has the romance of a classic Italian city, but without feeling overwhelming. Unlike some of Italy’s bigger cities, Verona feels easy to explore as a family.
And that is exactly why we fell in love with it.
Why We Loved Verona
One of the things we love most about travelling as a family is finding places where everyone enjoys themselves.
Verona turned out to be exactly that.
The girls loved exploring little streets, discovering old buildings, climbing steps to viewpoints and, of course, finding the best gelato shops. We loved sitting on sunny terraces, enjoying Italian food and watching life happen around us.
The city feels elegant without being too busy.
You can walk almost everywhere, which makes it perfect for families. No complicated metro systems, no long journeys between sights—just beautiful streets waiting to be explored.
And sometimes the best travel moments are not the famous landmarks.
They are the little things.
- A bakery filled with the smell of fresh focaccia.
- A quiet square where children play football.
- A hidden courtyard covered in flowers.
- A perfect Italian afternoon with nowhere else to be.
The Verona Arena: Where History Comes Alive
One of the first things you notice when arriving in Verona is the impressive Verona Arena.
Standing proudly in Piazza Bra, this ancient Roman amphitheatre is almost 2,000 years old and one of the best-preserved Roman arenas in the world. But what makes it special is that it is not just a piece of history. The Arena is still alive today.
During summer evenings, the stone seats fill with visitors enjoying spectacular opera performances under the stars. Imagine sitting inside a Roman amphitheatre, surrounded by history, while listening to world-famous music—that is a truly unforgettable Italian experience.
Even without attending a performance, visiting the Arena is a must. Walking through the ancient arches and standing inside the enormous arena makes history feel real. Our girls loved imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago when thousands of people gathered for events.
It is one of those places where children suddenly understand that history is not just something from a textbook.
Travelicious tip: Visit the Arena early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The light is beautiful, temperatures are cooler and you can take your time exploring.
A Visit to Juliet’s House
Of course, you cannot visit Verona without stopping at Juliet’s House.
- Yes, it is touristy.
- Yes, it can get busy.
But sometimes famous places become famous for a reason.
Standing beneath the famous balcony that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is one of those fun travel moments that everyone remembers.
The girls loved exploring the courtyard, seeing the love messages and being part of one of Verona’s most iconic traditions. Whether Romeo and Juliet were real or simply a beautiful story almost does not matter.
The romance is part of Verona’s charm. If you want to avoid long waiting times, booking a ticket or guided experience in advance can be a good idea, especially during busy travel periods.
Exploring Verona on Foot
The best way to discover Verona is slowly.
Put away the map for a while and simply wander.
Walk across the beautiful Ponte Pietra, one of the oldest bridges in the city, and enjoy the views over the Adige River.
Climb up to Castel San Pietro for one of the most beautiful views of Verona. The walk up is worth it, especially around sunset when the rooftops glow in the warm Italian light.
Then get lost in the historic centre. You will find beautiful squares, small boutiques, impressive churches and tiny streets that feel like they belong in a movie. Our favourite discoveries were often the ones we were not looking for.
Because that is the magic of Verona.
Slow Italian Mornings and Long Lunches
One of our favourite memories from Verona is not a landmark.
- It is breakfast.
- Fresh cappuccino.
- Warm pastries.
- Fresh fruit.
Watching the city slowly wake up. Italy has a special talent for making everyday moments feel memorable.
Later in the day, we would stop for pizza, pasta or a shared plate of Italian treats while enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of a terrace.
The girls were happy with their gelato. We were happy with an espresso.
Everyone wins. That is family travel at its best.
Is Verona Good for Kids?
Absolutely. Verona is one of those Italian cities that works beautifully for families. The historic centre is compact and easy to walk around. There are plenty of open squares, interesting sights and enough variety to keep children entertained.
It is also less hectic than cities like Rome or Venice, which means you can enjoy exploring without feeling like you are constantly rushing. For families travelling with younger children, the short distances are a huge advantage.
And let’s be honest… A city with excellent pizza and gelato already has a head start.

One of the reasons we love Verona is its location.
It is the perfect addition to a northern Italy road trip.

✨ Visit the Arena and Juliet’s House early in the day.
✨ Leave time for wandering. Verona’s charm is found between the famous sights.
✨ Don’t feel like you need to see everything. The best memories often come from slowing down.
Our Final Thoughts: Why Verona Stole Our Hearts
Verona surprised us. It was not the biggest city we visited in Italy.
It was not the most famous. But it became one of those places we still talk about long after returning home.
- Maybe it was the beautiful architecture.
- Maybe it was the incredible history.
- Maybe it was the relaxed Italian lifestyle that makes every coffee, meal and walk feel special.
Whatever it was, Verona reminded us why we love travelling through Italy as a family. Because sometimes the destinations you expect the least become the ones you remember forever.
And for us, Verona was exactly that. A little piece of Italian magic.
