Italy never disappoints, and our week at Lake Garda was no exception. Think sparkling blue water, colourful villages, delicious gelato around every corner, thrilling rollercoasters, and long evenings enjoying pizza on a terrace while watching the sunset over the lake. Honestly, it’s the kind of destination that makes you slow down and enjoy every single moment.

For our family of four, Lake Garda turned out to be the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. One day we were screaming our lungs out on rollercoasters at Gardaland, the next we were wandering through medieval streets in Sirmione or sipping cappuccinos in Verona.

If you’re planning a family holiday in Northern Italy, here’s exactly why Lake Garda deserves a spot on your bucket list.

Why Lake Garda is Perfect for Families

Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) is Italy’s largest lake and one of the country’s most loved holiday destinations. Located between Milan and Venice, it’s surrounded by mountains, vineyards, olive groves and charming Italian villages.

What makes Lake Garda so special is the incredible variety. You can spend your mornings exploring historic castles, your afternoons swimming in crystal-clear water, and your evenings enjoying authentic Italian cuisine.

For families, it’s almost impossible to get bored.

Whether your children love amusement parks, beaches, boat trips, nature or simply eating unlimited gelato (ours certainly did!), Lake Garda offers something for every age.

Where We Stayed

We chose Lake Garda as our base for a week, giving us plenty of time to explore both the southern part of the lake and nearby cities.

Having one accommodation for the entire week meant we didn’t have to pack and unpack every few days. Instead, we could enjoy relaxed breakfasts before heading out on a different adventure each day.

✈ Travelicious Tip: If you’re travelling with children, staying near the southern part of Lake Garda makes visiting attractions like Gardaland, Sirmione and Verona much easier.

A Magical Day at Gardaland

Let’s be honest…

If you’re travelling with kids, there’s a good chance Gardaland is already on your itinerary.

And it absolutely deserves to be.

Gardaland is Italy’s largest amusement park and offers an incredible mix of attractions for toddlers, younger children, teenagers and thrill-seeking adults.

Our girls couldn’t wait to explore all the themed areas. We started with the family rides before working our way up to the bigger attractions. The atmosphere throughout the park is fantastic, with colourful decorations, live entertainment and surprisingly beautiful landscaping.

One thing we really appreciated was how well organised everything felt. Even though it was busy, the park remained clean, efficient and easy to navigate.

Of course, there were queues for the most popular rides, but downloading the Gardaland app helped us plan our day around the shortest waiting times.

✈ Travelicious Tip: Buy your tickets online in advance and arrive before opening time. The first two hours are by far the quietest.

Falling in Love with Sirmione

If someone asked us to choose our favourite town around Lake Garda…

Sirmione would definitely be one of our top picks.

The town sits dramatically on a narrow peninsula that stretches into the lake, making it one of the most picturesque places we’ve visited in Italy.

Before you even enter the historic centre, you’re welcomed by the impressive Scaliger Castle. Crossing the drawbridge feels like stepping back into medieval times.

Inside the old town you’ll find narrow cobbled streets filled with boutiques, cafés, restaurants and, of course, plenty of gelato shops.

Our daughters loved wandering through the tiny alleyways, while we couldn’t stop taking photos of every colourful corner.

The waterfront views are simply breathtaking.

Things to do in Sirmione

  • Visit Scaliger Castle
  • Walk through the charming old town
  • Take a boat tour around the peninsula
  • Visit the Grotte di Catullo archaeological site
  • Enjoy lunch overlooking Lake Garda
  • Try one (or several!) authentic Italian gelatos
✈ Travelicious Tip: Visit early in the morning or after 5 PM if possible. During the middle of the day, especially in summer, Sirmione becomes very busy.

Exploring Beautiful Verona

One of the biggest advantages of staying at Lake Garda is that you’re only a short drive from Verona.

Known around the world as the city of Romeo and Juliet, Verona surprised us in the best possible way.

It’s elegant without feeling overwhelming, lively without being too crowded, and packed with beautiful architecture.

We spent hours wandering through Piazza delle Erbe, admiring the colourful buildings and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

The impressive Roman Arena is one of the best-preserved ancient amphitheatres in Europe and definitely worth seeing.

Of course, we also visited Juliet’s House. Yes, it’s touristy, but if it’s your first visit to Verona, it’s one of those iconic places you simply have to see.

Between sightseeing, we did what Italians do best: stop for coffee, enjoy long lunches and simply watch the world go by.

✈ Travelicious Tip: Wear comfortable shoes. Verona is best explored on foot.

A Relaxed Afternoon in Garda

Compared to the bustling atmosphere of Sirmione, the town of Garda feels wonderfully relaxed.

The lakeside promenade is lined with restaurants, cafés and small boutiques, making it the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon.

We enjoyed an aperitivo while watching sailing boats glide across the lake as the mountains slowly changed colour during sunset.

Sometimes you don’t need a packed itinerary.

Sometimes all you need is a beautiful view, great food and nowhere else to be.

Our Favourite Part? Simply Enjoying Italy

Looking back, our favourite memories aren’t necessarily the biggest attractions.

They’re the little moments.

Morning cappuccinos while the girls shared a croissant.

Fresh pasta for lunch.

Evening walks along the waterfront.

Watching the sunset with an ice cream in hand.

Ordering “just one more” pizza because Italian pizza somehow tastes even better on holiday.

Lake Garda invites you to slow down.

And that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Food You’ll Want to Eat Every Day

Let’s talk about the food…

Because, honestly, that’s reason enough to visit Italy.

Throughout the week we enjoyed:

  • Fresh wood-fired pizzas
  • Homemade pasta
  • Creamy burrata
  • Fresh seafood
  • Delicious tiramisu

The best pistachio gelato we’ve ever tasted

Countless cappuccinos and espressos

One thing we quickly learned: there is no such thing as too much gelato on holiday.

Practical Tips for Visiting Lake Garda

After spending a week exploring the area, here are our best tips:

Rent a car to explore different towns around the lake.

Stay at least one week to experience both the lake and nearby cities.

Visit popular places like Sirmione early in the day.

Book Gardaland tickets online before your trip.

Always carry swimwear—you never know when you’ll find the perfect beach.

Bring comfortable walking shoes.

Reserve restaurants for dinner during peak summer months.

Is One Week Enough?

Yes…

But also no.

A week allowed us to experience some of Lake Garda’s highlights, yet we still left with a list of places we’d love to visit next time.

On our wishlist are:

  • Malcesine
  • Limone sul Garda
  • Riva del Garda
  • Bardolino
  • Lazise
  • Monte Baldo

Every village has its own atmosphere, and that’s exactly what keeps people returning to Lake Garda year after year.

Final Thoughts: Would We Recommend Lake Garda?

Without hesitation.

Lake Garda exceeded our expectations.

It combines everything we love about travelling as a family: beautiful scenery, fun activities, authentic Italian culture, fantastic food and plenty of opportunities to relax.

Whether you’re visiting with toddlers, teenagers or grandparents, there’s enough variety to keep everyone happy.

For us, it wasn’t just another destination.

It became one of those places we’d happily return to in a heartbeat.

Because some holidays are simply unforgettable.

And Lake Garda is definitely one of them.
