Bangkok with Kids: Our Family Guide to Thailand’s Most Exciting City
There are cities you visit, and there are cities you experience. Bangkok definitely belongs in the second category.
Before arriving, we weren’t quite sure what to expect. We’d heard about the chaotic traffic, the humid weather and the endless crowds. Travelling with children, we wondered if Bangkok would feel overwhelming.
Instead, we fell in love with it.
Yes, Bangkok is busy. Yes, it’s noisy. But it’s also colourful, welcoming and full of little adventures around every corner. From golden temples and long-tail boats to incredible street food and rooftop sunsets, Bangkok became one of those places that constantly surprised us.
If you’re planning a family trip to Thailand, don’t rush straight to the islands. Spend a few days in Bangkok first—you won’t regret it.
Our Home Away from Home

Located in Bangkok’s historic district, the hotel offered a peaceful escape after busy days exploring the city. While Bangkok never seems to slow down, returning to the hotel each afternoon felt wonderfully relaxing.
The swimming pool quickly became our girls’ favourite place to cool off after walking around temples in the tropical heat. Every morning we enjoyed the extensive breakfast before heading out, and there was even a small gym where we could fit in a quick workout.
What we appreciated most was the combination of comfort, location and value for money. It had everything our family needed without feeling overly luxurious or expensive. We’d happily stay here again.
Seeing Bangkok from the Water
One of the best ways to discover Bangkok is by boat.
The Chao Phraya River is the city’s lifeline, with ferries and river taxis constantly travelling between temples, neighbourhoods and markets. For the kids, every boat ride felt like an attraction in itself.
Exploring the city from the water also gives you a welcome break from Bangkok’s famous traffic and offers a completely different perspective of the skyline.
It’s affordable, easy to use and one of our favourite memories from the trip.
The Magic of Bangkok’s Temples
The Grand Palace was every bit as impressive as we’d imagined.
The gold-covered buildings, intricate details and colourful decorations make it feel like stepping into another world. Our daughters loved spotting all the giant guardian statues while we admired the incredible architecture.
Our advice? Arrive early.
Not only will you avoid the biggest crowds, but you’ll also escape some of the midday heat.
Another highlight was Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn. We crossed the river by ferry just before sunset and watched as the warm evening light reflected off the temple’s beautiful porcelain decorations. It was one of those quiet travel moments that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
Tuk-Tuks, Markets and Street Food
No visit to Bangkok is complete without riding in a tuk-tuk.
Is it always the cheapest option?
Probably not.
Is it one of the most fun?
Without a doubt.
Our girls absolutely loved weaving through the traffic with the warm evening breeze rushing past.
Bangkok’s markets were another family favourite. Every corner seemed to offer something different: handmade souvenirs, colourful fabrics, tropical fruit and delicious local snacks.
Speaking of food…
We were pleasantly surprised by how much our children enjoyed eating in Bangkok.
Of course we tried Pad Thai, but mango sticky rice, grilled chicken skewers, fresh fruit smoothies and banana pancakes quickly became family favourites.
If your children are less adventurous eaters, don’t worry. Bangkok has plenty of restaurants serving familiar meals too, making it easy to mix local flavours with dishes everyone enjoys.
One of Our Favourite Thailand Travel Hacks
One thing we absolutely love about travelling in Thailand is how easy it is to have your laundry done.
You’ll find small laundry shops almost everywhere, and for just a few euros you can have an entire bag of clothes washed, dried and neatly folded—often ready the very next day.
For families, this is an absolute game changer.
Instead of packing enough clothes for two or three weeks, we simply bring enough for about a week and have everything washed during our trip.
It means lighter suitcases, less stress when moving between hotels and plenty of extra space for souvenirs on the way home.
Travelling light has completely changed the way we explore Thailand, and we honestly wouldn’t do it any other way.
Shopping and Rooftop Views
Bangkok offers the best of both worlds.
One moment you’re wandering through traditional markets, and the next you’re walking through enormous modern shopping malls filled with restaurants, indoor playgrounds and air conditioning—perfect for escaping the afternoon heat.
As evening falls, the city transforms completely.
Treat yourself to dinner or a drink at one of Bangkok’s rooftop restaurants. Watching the sun disappear behind the skyline while the city lights slowly come alive is an experience you’ll never forget.
Sometimes those are the moments that become the highlight of the entire trip.
Is Bangkok Family-Friendly?
Absolutely.
Like any major city, you should stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings, but throughout our stay we always felt welcome.
The biggest challenge wasn’t safety.
It was the heat.
Plan your sightseeing early in the morning, take a break during the hottest part of the day—perhaps back at the hotel pool—and head out again in the evening when the city comes alive.
You’ll enjoy Bangkok so much more that way.
Our Travelicious Tips for Bangkok
- Stay at least three nights before travelling to the islands.
- Explore the city by boat whenever possible.
- Visit the temples early in the morning.
- Don’t be afraid to try the street food.
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Use Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain to avoid traffic whenever possible.
- Pack light and make use of Thailand’s affordable laundry services.
Why We Can’t Wait to Return
Bangkok challenged every expectation we had.
Instead of being a hectic stopover, it became one of the highlights of our Thailand adventure.
It’s a city where ancient temples stand next to modern skyscrapers, where every street offers a new surprise and where children can discover a completely different culture while still having fun every single day.
For us, Bangkok wasn’t just the start of our Thailand journey.
