Bardonecchia Ski Resort Italy: The Hidden Italian Ski Gem We Fell in Love With

When most people think about skiing in Italy, their minds immediately go to the famous Dolomites, glamorous Cortina d’Ampezzo or the huge ski areas of the Italian Alps.
But there is another side of Italy that we absolutely love: smaller mountain villages where life moves a little slower, where lunch on the slopes is just as important as the skiing itself, and where you still feel like you have discovered a hidden gem.
That is exactly what we found in Bardonecchia.
Located in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, close to the French border, Bardonecchia surprised us from the moment we arrived. Beautiful snowy mountains, quiet slopes, delicious Italian food and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere made this one of our favourite family ski trips.
And the best part? It doesn’t have the crowds and prices of some of Europe’s more famous ski resorts.

From the Netherlands, it is approximately a 10 to 11-hour drive, making it a very realistic destination for a family ski road trip.
We actually love driving to Italy because it gives you so much freedom. You can bring all your winter gear, stop along the way and turn the journey into part of the adventure.

Our Stay at Savoia Mountain Resort: Sleeping on the Slopes
One of the reasons our Bardonecchia trip became so memorable was our stay at the Savoia Mountain Resort.
Imagine waking up high in the mountains, opening your curtains and seeing nothing but snowy peaks. No busy streets, no ski buses, no carrying equipment through the village.
Just mountains. The hotel is located at around 2,000 metres altitude in the Jafferau ski area and offers a true ski-in/ski-out experience.
Every morning we simply stepped outside, clicked into our skis and headed straight towards the lifts. For a family ski holiday, this makes such a difference.
- No rushing in the morning.
- No tired children carrying skis.
- No searching for parking spaces.

After a day on the slopes, the hotel was the perfect place to relax. The wellness area, pool and mountain views created that feeling you hope for after a day of skiing: tired legs, happy faces and complete relaxation.
And of course… this is Italy. The food was amazing.
Long dinners with pasta, local dishes and delicious desserts became just as much a part of the holiday as skiing itself.
Because let’s be honest: one of the best things about skiing in Italy is that lunch and dinner are an experience, not just a break between activities.
Skiing in Bardonecchia: The Three Ski Areas
Bardonecchia offers around 100 kilometres of ski slopes divided over three main areas. Each area has its own character, which makes it a great destination for mixed groups and families.
Jafferau: The Mountain Experience
Jafferau was our favourite area.
This is where you really feel like you are in the middle of the Alps. The views are spectacular, the slopes are wide and the higher altitude gives you that true mountain feeling. Staying at Savoia Mountain Resort meant we were already right here when the ski day started.
It honestly felt like having the mountain almost to ourselves.
Campo Smith: Perfect for Families
Campo Smith is the main ski area and a great choice for families.
You will find:
- Beginner slopes
- Ski schools
- Easy blue runs
- Restaurants
- Equipment rental
It is a comfortable place to start your ski adventure, especially if children are learning.
Melezet: Relaxed and Beginner-Friendly
Melezet is another lovely area, especially for beginners. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, making it a great place for children or anyone who is still building confidence on skis.
Is Bardonecchia Good for Families?
One of the things we loved most about Bardonecchia was how family-friendly it felt.
Some ski resorts can feel a little overwhelming: busy lifts, expensive restaurants, crowded slopes and a lot of rushing around. Bardonecchia felt completely different.
Here, families take their time. Children learn to ski on gentle slopes, parents enjoy a coffee with a mountain view and everyone meets again for a long Italian lunch.

The Best Time to Ski in Bardonecchia
Bardonecchia has a long winter season, usually running from early December until April.
The resort sits between approximately 1,300 and almost 2,800 metres, which helps provide good snow conditions throughout the season.
The best months to visit are:
January
A great month for quieter slopes and excellent snow conditions.
February
The most popular month, especially during school holidays. The atmosphere is lively, but booking early is important.
March
Our favourite time for many Italian ski resorts. Longer sunny days, beautiful snow conditions and a relaxed atmosphere.
If you are travelling during school holidays, we recommend booking your accommodation, ski lessons and equipment well in advance.
Renting Ski Equipment in Bardonecchia
Travelling with the whole family means a lot of luggage.
Skis, boots, helmets, jackets, gloves… suddenly your car feels much smaller. One of the easiest ways to make a ski holiday more comfortable is renting your equipment locally.
Bardonecchia has several ski rental shops where you can arrange everything from children’s skis to professional equipment. Booking online in advance often saves time and sometimes money.
For families, we would definitely recommend booking helmets and children’s equipment ahead of time, especially during busy holiday periods.

Compared to some of the larger Alpine resorts, Bardonecchia is a more affordable ski destination.

Let’s talk about food. Because skiing in Italy is not just about the slopes.
It is about stopping halfway through the day, sitting outside in the sunshine and ordering a plate of fresh pasta while looking at snowy mountains.
It is about warming up with a creamy hot chocolate after a cold morning on the slopes. And it is about ending the day with a relaxed dinner where nobody is in a hurry.
Some Italian ski resorts can feel very international, but Bardonecchia still feels wonderfully local. Don’t leave without trying:

One of the best parts of staying at Savoia Mountain Resort was simply enjoying the surroundings. After a day outdoors, sitting in the wellness area and looking at the mountains was the perfect way to end the day.
Driving to Bardonecchia from the Netherlands
For Dutch families, Bardonecchia is a surprisingly accessible ski destination by car.
The drive takes approximately 10 to 11 hours, depending on your departure point and stops along the way.
The advantage of driving is that you can bring everything you need and have a car available during your stay.

Would We Recommend Bardonecchia?
Absolutely.
Before visiting Bardonecchia, we weren’t sure what to expect. It doesn’t have the worldwide fame of some of Italy’s bigger ski resorts, and you don’t see it mentioned as often as destinations in the Dolomites.
But maybe that is exactly why we loved it so much.
Bardonecchia feels authentic.
It feels like a place where Italian families come back every winter, where mountain restaurants still focus on good food instead of quick meals, and where you can enjoy the beauty of the Alps without feeling overwhelmed by crowds.
