Langkawi Packing List

Packing for Langkawi with kids is actually quite straightforward. You’ll spend most of your time in swimwear, light clothes and flip-flops, but there are a few things I would definitely make room for in your suitcase.
When we travelled to Langkawi with our two girls, we wanted to keep our luggage manageable while still having everything we needed for beach days, boat trips, exploring and those wonderfully lazy afternoons by the pool. And because Langkawi was part of our wider Malaysia trip, I also wanted our packing to work for the different destinations we visited along the way.
If you’re still working out what to do on the island, have a look at our Langkawi with Kids guide. It covers the activities and experiences we enjoyed as a family and will give you a good idea of what you’ll actually need to pack.

Clothes for Langkawi

Langkawi is hot and humid, so lightweight clothing is your friend. We mostly lived in shorts, T-shirts, dresses and swimwear.
For each person, I would pack:

  • 5–7 lightweight T-shirts or tops
  • 3–4 pairs of shorts or skirts
  • 1–2 lightweight dresses or outfits for evenings
  • 2–3 swimsuits or swimming trunks
  • Underwear for around a week
  • Sleepwear
  • A light cardigan or long-sleeved top
  • A thin pair of long trousers
  • Comfortable sandals or flip-flops
  • Trainers or other comfortable walking shoes

You really don’t need a completely different outfit for every day. Clothes dry quickly in the heat, and laundry is easy to arrange if you’re travelling for longer.
For our Malaysia trip, this was especially useful because Langkawi was only one part of the itinerary. We didn’t want to take a huge suitcase just because we were spending time on a tropical island.
If you’re planning a longer trip around the country, our Malaysia Itinerary is a good place to start. Your packing list will depend quite a bit on whether you’re combining Langkawi with Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands, Penang or other parts of Malaysia.

Swimwear is probably your most important item

If your children are anything like ours, swimwear will get used every single day.
We packed several swimsuits each because one was almost always wet, hanging up to dry or covered in sand.
I’d also recommend bringing:

  • UV swim shirt
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Swimming goggles
  • Lightweight beach cover-up
  • Waterproof bag for wet swimwear
  • Water shoes

And don’t forget that the sun can be surprisingly strong. A good reef-safe sunscreen with a high SPF is something I wouldn’t want to run out of halfway through the holiday.

What to wear for activities

One of the reasons we loved Langkawi was that it wasn’t just about sitting by the pool. There are plenty of things to do with children, from exploring the island to getting out on the water.
We even went parasailing during one of our beach days. The girls had been talking about it for practically the entire holiday, so when the moment finally came, they were unbelievably excited!
For activities like this, comfortable swimwear and something you can easily move around in are much more useful than dressy clothes.
A pair of trainers or proper walking sandals is also worth packing if you plan to explore more of the island.

Don’t forget sun protection

This is one area where I would rather have too much than too little.
Pack:

  • High-SPF sunscreen
  • Face sunscreen
  • After-sun or aloe vera
  • Sun hats
  • Sunglasses
  • UV shirts for children
  • SPF lip balm

We usually bring sunscreen from home because we know which products work for us and don’t want to spend the first day of our holiday searching for it.
A small reusable water bottle for everyone is useful too. You’ll be drinking plenty in the Malaysian heat.

A small day bag

You don’t want to carry your main suitcase or a large backpack everywhere, so a small day bag is really handy.
For a family day out, ours would usually contain:

  • Water bottles
  • Sunscreen
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Snacks
  • Swimwear or a change of clothes
  • Phone
  • Small towel
  • Waterproof pouch for valuables

A lightweight backpack is probably more practical than a handbag, especially if you’re travelling with children.

What to pack for boat trips and beach days

If you’re planning boat trips, island hopping or simply spending lots of time at the beach, a few extra things can make life much easier.
I’d add:

  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Dry bag
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Waterproof bag for wet clothes
  • Small waterproof case for valuables
  • Reef-friendly sunscreen
  • Water shoes, if your children prefer them

A dry bag is one of those things that takes up very little space but can be incredibly useful when you’re travelling around the islands.

Packing cubes make family packing much easier

This is where our Travelicious packing cubes have become one of my favourite travel essentials.
When you’re travelling as a family, it is very easy for one suitcase to turn into a giant pile of everyone’s clothes. We actually use a different colour for each family member, so everyone has their own cube.
Dad has his colour, I have mine, and Anneloes and Evelijn each have their own too. It makes finding things much easier, especially when you’re moving between hotels.
We also use a separate cube for dirty laundry. That might sound like a small thing, but it means clean clothes stay clean and the dirty clothes don’t end up mixed together with everything else.
For a trip like Malaysia, where you may be moving between several destinations, this makes a big difference. Instead of unpacking your entire suitcase every time you arrive somewhere new, you can simply take out the cubes you need.
You can find our Travelicious Packing Cubes here if you want to organise your family’s suitcase in the same way.

Toiletries

Most basic toiletries are easy enough to find in Malaysia, but I still prefer to take our essentials from home.
Pack:

  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Shower gel
  • Deodorant
  • Hairbrush
  • Hair ties
  • Moisturiser
  • Personal medication
  • Basic first-aid supplies

For children, I would also bring anything they are particular about. Holidays are not the time to discover that your child absolutely refuses to use the shampoo you bought locally!

A few useful extras

There are a few things that don’t necessarily make it onto a traditional packing list but that I find useful when travelling around Malaysia.

Power bank

Useful for long travel days, boat trips and days when you’re using your phone for navigation, photos and tickets.

Universal travel adapter

Malaysia uses Type G sockets, so bring an adapter if your plugs aren’t compatible.

Reusable shopping bag

These are useful for small purchases, beach gear and keeping things together when you’re out and about.

Small first-aid kit

Plasters, antiseptic wipes, painkillers and anything your family normally uses are worth having with you.

Insect repellent

Langkawi is tropical, so mosquito repellent is worth packing, particularly for evenings.

Waterproof phone pouch

We used ours more than expected. Between swimming, beaches and boat trips, keeping your phone protected from water is definitely useful.

What NOT to overpack for Langkawi

This is probably just as important as knowing what to take.
You don’t need:

  • Lots of smart outfits
  • Heavy jeans
  • Multiple pairs of shoes
  • Thick jumpers
  • Huge amounts of toiletries
  • A different outfit for every day

Langkawi is casual. Most of the time you’ll be in comfortable clothes, swimwear and sandals.
And if you’re combining Langkawi with other parts of Malaysia, remember that the climate can vary. The Cameron Highlands, for example, can feel considerably cooler than the coast, so check your complete itinerary before deciding exactly what to pack.

So, what do you really need for Langkawi?

The good news is that packing for Langkawi doesn’t have to be complicated. Think light, comfortable and practical.
For us, the biggest essentials were swimwear, sun protection, comfortable clothes and a few things that made travelling with two children easier. The packing cubes were particularly useful because we were travelling around Malaysia rather than staying in one hotel for the entire holiday.
And once you’ve packed everything, the fun part can begin: planning what you’re actually going to do.
Because honestly, you don’t need a suitcase full of stuff for Langkawi. You mostly need swimwear, sunscreen, comfortable clothes and enough space in your suitcase for all the memories you’re going to bring home.
