Yas Island with kids..

There is a moment on almost every family holiday when the children suddenly take over the itinerary.
You can try to introduce them to culture, architecture and beautiful beaches. You can show them impressive skylines and tell them about the history of a place. And they will happily go along with you.
Until they spot a roller coaster.
That was pretty much the feeling we got when we discovered Yas Island.
After spending time exploring Abu Dhabi, visiting the incredible Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and taking in the more relaxed side of the city, Yas Island felt like stepping into a completely different UAE.
Suddenly it was all roller coasters, water slides, superheroes, racing cars and the kind of excitement that makes children wake up suspiciously early because they absolutely cannot wait to get started.
And honestly?
I was just as excited.

Yas Island: Abu Dhabi’s family playground

If Dubai is the UAE destination that constantly seems to be shouting “look what we can build!”, Abu Dhabi feels a little more spacious and relaxed.
And then you arrive on Yas Island and that changes again.
Yas Island is essentially Abu Dhabi’s entertainment playground. It brings several of the UAE’s biggest family attractions together in one relatively compact area, which makes it incredibly easy to build a few days around it.
There is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, alongside the Yas Marina Circuit and plenty of hotels, restaurants and other entertainment.
And this is one of the things I love about Yas Island with kids.
You don’t have to spend your holiday driving from one attraction to another.
Everything is close.
Which, when you’re travelling with children, is a surprisingly big deal.
Because there is nothing quite like hearing:
“Are we there yet?”
when you have only been in the car for twelve minutes.

So, is Yas Island worth visiting with kids?

Without hesitation.
But I wouldn’t make the mistake of trying to conquer the whole island in one day.
You could technically look at a map and think: Well, everything is next to each other, let’s do two parks today.
Please don’t.
Unless your children have significantly more energy than mine.
A theme park day is a big day. There are queues, walking, rides, food, excitement and approximately seventeen requests for snacks.
By late afternoon, everyone will probably be ready for a pool.
That’s why I would treat Yas Island as a destination in itself rather than simply squeezing it into your Abu Dhabi sightseeing day.
And if you’re planning a UAE trip of around 8–10 days, Yas Island fits beautifully into the itinerary we describe in our UAE with Kids: The Ultimate Family Guide.

Ferrari World: for the speed demons

Let’s start with the one that tends to get the biggest reaction from older children and anyone who likes things to go very, very fast.
Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is exactly what the name suggests: a Ferrari-themed indoor amusement park built around speed, racing and, of course, the famous Ferrari brand.
And because it is largely indoors, it also solves one of the biggest practical challenges of visiting the UAE with children.
The heat.
You can be outside in the sunshine one minute and happily enjoying an air-conditioned attraction the next.
The park is particularly appealing if you have children who are fascinated by cars and roller coasters.
And then there is the small problem of convincing them that one ride is enough.
It won’t be.
Ferrari World is also home to some seriously fast rides, so check height and age requirements before you promise the children they can ride everything. Nothing kills the mood quite like arriving at the entrance to a roller coaster and discovering that someone is three centimetres too short.
Travelicious tip: Don’t plan a full day of sightseeing around a major theme park visit. Pick your park, arrive with energy and let the day unfold.

Warner Bros. World: when the characters come alive

If Ferrari World is about speed, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi is about stepping straight into a movie or cartoon.
This one is particularly fun for families because it isn’t aimed solely at thrill-seeking teenagers.
You can wander through different themed worlds and suddenly find yourself surrounded by characters the children already know from home.
For younger children especially, that familiarity makes a huge difference.
It’s not just a theme park.
It’s Batman.
It’s Superman.
It’s the Flintstones.
It’s Bugs Bunny.
It’s the feeling that the screen has suddenly become real.
And I think that’s one of the reasons theme parks work so well when travelling with kids. They don’t necessarily need to understand the history of a city or appreciate every architectural detail.
They know these characters.
They recognise them.
And suddenly they are completely engaged.

Yas Waterworld: because every family needs a pool day

There comes a point during every UAE holiday when someone announces:
“I just want to go swimming.”
And frankly, I understand them.
The UAE is made for pool days.
After a few days of sightseeing, shopping and walking around Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld is the perfect excuse to stop trying to educate the children and simply let them have fun.
There are water slides, pools and attractions for different ages, so families can easily spend most of the day here.
And this is also why I always say that pool time isn’t wasted time when you’re travelling with children.
It’s part of the holiday.
In our Dubai with Kids guide, we talk about exactly the same thing: Dubai has so many attractions that it’s tempting to fill every single day. But sometimes the best afternoon is the one where you sit beside the pool while the children disappear into the water for three hours.
Yas Waterworld gives you an entire day of doing exactly that — just with considerably more slides.

SeaWorld Abu Dhabi

Then there is SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, which adds something completely different to Yas Island.
If your children love animals and marine life, this can easily become one of the highlights.
What I like about having this choice on Yas Island is that not every family needs the same holiday.
Maybe one child is obsessed with roller coasters.
Maybe another would happily spend all day looking at marine animals.
Maybe the parents would quite like a quieter day after two days of adrenaline.
Yas Island gives you options.
And that is really the secret to making it work.
Don’t ask yourself:

“How do we see everything?”

Ask:

“What will our family actually enjoy?”

How many days do you need on Yas Island?

For most families, I would allow at least two days if theme parks are one of the main reasons you’re visiting.
One day could be dedicated to your favourite theme park.
The second could be another park or Yas Waterworld.
If your children are big theme park fans, you could easily spend three days here.
And if you are staying on Yas Island, you don’t necessarily have to fill every minute.
That is one of the advantages of staying nearby.
You can have breakfast, head to a park, return to the hotel for a swim and then go out for dinner.
Much better than trying to combine a theme park with the Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi and a city tour on the same day.
We learned long ago that children don’t appreciate our carefully constructed sightseeing schedules nearly as much as we do.

Where should you stay?

If Yas Island is an important part of your trip, staying on or close to the island makes a lot of sense.
There are several family-friendly hotels around Yas Island, and the biggest advantage is convenience.
You’re close to the parks.
You’re close to restaurants.
You’re close to the action.
And when everyone is exhausted at the end of the day, you don’t have a long journey back across Abu Dhabi.
That is exactly the kind of luxury I appreciate when travelling with kids.
Not necessarily a marble bathroom.
Not necessarily a twelve-course dinner.
Just being back at the hotel before someone starts complaining that their feet hurt.

Yas Island as part of a bigger UAE adventure

One of the reasons I would never visit Yas Island on its own is that it makes much more sense as part of a wider UAE trip.
And this is where the difference between Dubai and Abu Dhabi becomes really interesting.
We wrote about this in Dubai versus Abu Dhabi: Which One Would You Choose?
Because if you’re asking me to choose one, I’m going to cheat.
I want both.
Dubai gives you the skyscrapers, the enormous malls, the beaches, the waterparks and those “surely they didn’t really build that?” moments.
Abu Dhabi feels calmer.
More spacious.
More cultural.
And then Yas Island adds this huge burst of family entertainment.
It’s almost like Abu Dhabi is saying:
“Yes, we have the Grand Mosque and beautiful beaches… but we can also build one of the world’s biggest indoor theme parks.”
And that combination is exactly what makes it work.

Don’t forget the rest of Abu Dhabi

The temptation with Yas Island is to stay there for your entire Abu Dhabi visit.
I get it.
The children will probably vote for it.
But don’t let the theme parks mean you miss the rest of the city.
One day, take them to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
It might surprise you how much they notice if you turn it into a little treasure hunt. Look for the enormous chandeliers, the patterns, the arches and all the tiny details in the architecture.
Then another day, slow things down.
Go to the beach.
Swim.
Have lunch.
Do absolutely nothing for a while.
This balance is what we love about Abu Dhabi, and it’s something we explore in much more detail in our Abu Dhabi with Kids guide.
Because a family holiday doesn’t need to be one giant checklist.
Sometimes the memories come from the completely unplanned moments.

What about Dubai?

If Yas Island has made the children demand “another theme park!”, you may have a problem.
Because Dubai is not going to help.
Dubai has its own collection of enormous attractions, waterparks and indoor entertainment.
It is also why we recommend combining the two cities rather than treating them as competitors.
You can read our Dubai with Kids guide before planning your Dubai days, and if you’re still wondering which city deserves more of your time, our Dubai vs Abu Dhabi: Which One Should You Visit? guide will help you work out which fits your family best.
For us, the answer is simple:

Don’t choose. Combine them.

Booking Yas Island attractions

The popular attractions can get busy, particularly during school holidays and the cooler travel months.
I wouldn’t necessarily pre-book every single activity of your holiday, but if you know your children have their hearts set on a particular theme park, it’s sensible to arrange tickets ahead of time.
You can browse Yas Island and Abu Dhabi experiences and tickets here, https://getyourguide.tpk.lu/OrKGbkZY
And check the individual attraction’s current age and height requirements before booking. Those details can make a surprisingly big difference when you’re travelling with children.

A little practical advice: don’t underestimate the UAE heat

The UAE is incredibly easy to visit with kids, but the temperature can change the way you plan your days.
This is one of the reasons Yas Island works so well.
So many of the major attractions are indoors or designed around water and air-conditioned spaces.
Still, you will be walking between attractions, getting in and out of cars and spending some time outside.
Bring water.
Use sunscreen.
Take breaks.
And don’t feel guilty about retreating to the hotel pool in the middle of the day.
In fact, I’d make it part of the plan.
Our UAE Packing List for Families has all the practical things we recommend taking, from lightweight clothing and swimwear to sun protection and the little extras that make family travel easier.
And yes, packing cubes are on our list too, https://www.travel-icious.com/product/travel-storage-bag-compressible-packaging-cube-copy/
Because after one day of theme parks, swimming and changing clothes, your suitcase can look like a small explosion.

Our perfect Yas Island day

If I were planning the day again, I wouldn’t make it complicated.
I’d have a decent breakfast.
I’d choose one main attraction.
I’d arrive early enough to make the most of it.
I’d take plenty of water.
I’d eat when everyone is hungry rather than when the itinerary says it’s lunchtime.
I’d allow time for the pool afterwards.
And I’d finish with dinner somewhere relaxed.
No second theme park.
No sightseeing tour.
No attempt to see all of Abu Dhabi.
Just one really good family day.
Because that is something we’ve learned from travelling with children: one amazing experience is usually worth much more than five rushed ones.

And suddenly it’s not just about the roller coasters

That’s perhaps what I like most about Yas Island.
Yes, the theme parks are spectacular.
Yes, the rides are exciting.
Yes, the children will probably talk about them for weeks afterwards.
But Yas Island fits into something much bigger.
A UAE family holiday can start with skyscrapers in Dubai, move into the desert, slow down on an Abu Dhabi beach and then suddenly find you screaming on a roller coaster together.
You can spend one day learning about the culture and history of the UAE and the next day arguing about who gets to sit in the front row.
And somehow, it all works.
So if you’re planning your UAE adventure, don’t think of Yas Island as simply another attraction to tick off.
Give it some space.
Give the kids a day where they get to choose the fun.
And maybe, just maybe, when they ask “Can we go again?”, you’ll find yourself saying yes.

Planning a UAE family holiday?

Start with our UAE with Kids: The Ultimate Family Guide, then dive into the destination-specific guides:
Dubai with Kids → skyscrapers, beaches, waterparks, shopping and family adventures.
Abu Dhabi with Kids → the Grand Mosque, beaches, culture and everything beyond Yas Island.
Dubai vs Abu Dhabi: Which One Would You Choose? → because sometimes choosing is unnecessary.
UAE Packing List for Families → everything you actually need to take without packing the entire house.
And if Yas Island is going to be one of the highlights of your trip, make sure you give it enough time. One great park is better than three exhausted children and two very tired parents.
