SeaWorld Orlando with Kids: More Than Just a Theme Park

There are days in Orlando when you want to chase the biggest roller coasters, days when you want to meet your favourite Disney characters, and days when you simply want to do something a little different.
For us, SeaWorld Orlando is that kind of day.
At first glance, SeaWorld might seem like it sits somewhere between a zoo and a theme park. And honestly? That is exactly what makes it so much fun with kids. One minute you are watching dolphins glide through the water, the next you are screaming your way down a roller coaster, and before you know it, you are standing in front of a penguin habitat wondering how it can possibly be that cold in Florida.
It is a completely different experience from the Disney parks and Universal, but that is also why I think SeaWorld deserves a place on your Orlando itinerary.

So, what is SeaWorld Orlando actually like?

This is probably the question I get most often.
SeaWorld isn’t simply an aquarium, and it isn’t just a collection of roller coasters either. It combines marine-life experiences, animal habitats, shows, family attractions and some seriously impressive thrill rides.
And that combination works surprisingly well.
You can start your morning watching dolphins, wander through the penguin area, stop for lunch and then spend the afternoon on roller coasters. There is enough variety that different members of the family can have completely different favourite moments.
For families, that is a big advantage.
SeaWorld currently has everything from kid-friendly attractions in Sesame Street Land to major coasters such as Mako, Manta and Kraken.
So yes, your adrenaline-loving teenager will have plenty to do.
But so will the child who would rather spend an hour watching penguins.
And that might be my favourite thing about SeaWorld.

The animals are still the heart of SeaWorld

Even though SeaWorld has become increasingly known for its roller coasters, the animals are what make the park different from the other theme parks in Orlando.
And there are some genuinely lovely moments.
Watching dolphins play at Dolphin Cove is one of those experiences where everyone tends to stop for a while. There is something about seeing them moving through the water that is completely different from watching an attraction.
Then there are the sharks.
The Shark Encounter takes you through an underwater tunnel where sharks swim above and around you. It is the kind of place where kids suddenly become very quiet — usually followed by a whispered, “Look at that one!”
And don’t skip the underwater viewing areas. Seeing marine animals both above and below the water gives you a completely different perspective.
SeaWorld also has areas dedicated to animals such as penguins, manatees and other marine life, with opportunities to learn more about conservation and animal care.

And then there are the penguins…

If your kids love animals, make time for the penguins.
There is something wonderfully ridiculous about going from the Florida heat into a chilly Antarctic environment. One minute you are sweating in the Orlando sunshine, and the next you are standing in front of penguins surrounded by ice.
It is also a nice change of pace after the rides.
Instead of rushing from attraction to attraction, you can slow down and actually watch the animals for a while.
And with kids, those quieter moments can sometimes become the memories you didn’t expect.

SeaWorld is also seriously good for thrill seekers

Now, if you thought SeaWorld was mainly for animal lovers, think again.
This park has some very serious roller coasters.

Mako

If your kids are tall enough — and brave enough — put Mako on the list.
Mako is one of SeaWorld’s signature coasters and is designed around the speed and movement of the mako shark. It reaches up to 73 mph and is built for those who like their theme-park rides fast, high and full of airtime.
It is definitely not the ride I would choose after lunch.
Or before lunch, for that matter.

Manta

Manta is another SeaWorld classic and a completely different experience.
You don’t sit upright like you do on a traditional coaster. Instead, you are positioned face-down, giving the feeling that you are flying like a manta ray.
It looks slightly terrifying from the ground.
Which, of course, makes it even more tempting for teenagers.

Kraken

And then there is Kraken.
This floorless coaster is another one for the serious thrill seekers. If your family has children who measure a holiday by how many roller coasters they can tick off, SeaWorld could easily become one of their favourite Orlando parks.

Ice Breaker

Ice Breaker is a little different, with several launches and a steep drop that makes the ride feel surprisingly intense.
It’s one of those rides where you can hear the screams before you even see the coaster.

Pipeline: The Surf Coaster

And then there is Pipeline, which takes the idea of a roller coaster and gives it a surfing twist.
Rather than sitting still in a traditional coaster seat, the ride is designed to make you feel like you’re riding the waves.
It is another reason SeaWorld has become such an interesting stop for older kids and teenagers.

But what about younger kids?

This is where I think SeaWorld can surprise families.
It isn’t just a park for teenagers who want to ride roller coasters.
Sesame Street Land is designed with younger children in mind, with rides, characters and family-friendly entertainment.
So if you are travelling with children of different ages, you don’t necessarily have to split up for the entire day.
The little ones can enjoy Sesame Street Land and the animal experiences, while the older kids can head for the bigger rides.
And, of course, everyone can meet back up for lunch.
That balance is one of the reasons I would consider SeaWorld when planning a family Orlando itinerary.

Don’t miss Infinity Falls

There is one thing you should know before getting on Infinity Falls:

You are going to get wet.

Not maybe wet.
Wet.
Infinity Falls is a family-friendly river ride where you travel through a tropical setting, tackle rapids and eventually plunge down a dramatic waterfall. The ride has a minimum height of 42 inches.
On a hot Florida day, getting completely soaked can actually be one of the best things that happens to you.
On a cooler day?
Let’s just say I would think twice.
If you’re doing the ride, bring a change of clothes or make sure you’re happy walking around in wet shoes afterwards.
Your children will probably think the soaking is the best part.

Don’t rush through the animal presentations

One thing I would change about the way many families approach SeaWorld is trying to do everything.
You don’t have to.
The park has animal presentations and shows featuring dolphins, sea lions and other marine animals, and these can be a nice break between rides.
Check the schedule before you arrive and pick the ones that genuinely interest your family.
That way you are not spending the entire day running from one attraction to another.
Because honestly?
Sometimes sitting down in the shade while watching dolphins is exactly what everyone needs after three roller coasters.

How long do you need at SeaWorld Orlando?

I would plan a full day if SeaWorld is important to your family.
Could you do it faster? Absolutely.
But if you want to experience the animals, see a presentation, enjoy some rides and have time to eat without constantly looking at the clock, a full day is much more relaxed.
And this is Florida.
You don’t want your family holiday to become a military operation.
Especially when you’re travelling with kids.

Our tips for visiting SeaWorld Orlando with kids

Arrive early

As with most Orlando theme parks, getting there early gives you a head start on the busiest attractions.
If the big roller coasters are important to your family, tackle those earlier in the day and save the animal experiences for later.

Check the show schedule

Don’t just arrive and hope for the best.
Showtimes and presentations change, so check the schedule before your visit and plan around the things you really want to see.

Check height requirements

This is especially important if you have children who are almost tall enough for the bigger rides.
SeaWorld has different minimum heights depending on the attraction. For example, Mako, Manta and Kraken require riders to be at least 54 inches, while Infinity Falls starts at 42 inches.
Nothing is more disappointing than getting to the front of a queue and discovering your child is two centimetres too short.
We’ve all been there.

Bring clothes you don’t mind getting wet

If Infinity Falls is on your list, just accept that someone is going to get soaked.
And probably that someone will be the person who said, “Don’t worry, I won’t get that wet.”

Don’t make it all about the rides

This is probably my biggest tip.
SeaWorld has some great coasters, but the animals are what make this park different.
Slow down.
Watch the dolphins.
Look at the penguins.
Walk through the shark tunnel.
Those are the moments you can’t recreate at Universal or Disney.

A little-known SeaWorld money-saving tip

Here’s a tip that can make SeaWorld a much better deal: keep your receipt!
Depending on the current ticket promotion, SeaWorld may allow you to return for free after your first visit when you show your original receipt. That means you can potentially turn one day at SeaWorld into two visits without paying for another full admission.
We discovered this is especially useful if you have a longer Orlando stay. You don’t have to cram everything into one day. You can enjoy the big roller coasters and some of the animal experiences on your first visit, and then come back another day for the things you missed.
Just check the terms of the promotion when you buy your tickets, as return-visit offers and conditions can change.
Honestly, this is one of those little Orlando tips that can save you money and make your holiday much more relaxed. Because having the option to say, “We’ll come back another day,” is pretty nice when you’re travelling with kids.

Is SeaWorld Orlando worth visiting?

For us, yes — especially if you are spending a longer holiday in Orlando.
If this is your first-ever Orlando trip and you only have three days, I would probably prioritise Disney and Universal.
But if you have a week or more?

Add SeaWorld.

It gives you something completely different.
After the castles of Magic Kingdom, the movie magic of Hollywood Studios, the world showcase at Epcot and the animals of Animal Kingdom, SeaWorld adds another side of Florida to your holiday.
And if your kids are roller-coaster fans, it may end up being one of their favourite days of the entire trip.
That is the thing about Orlando.
You arrive thinking you know which parks your family will love.
And then one completely unexpected park becomes the one everyone talks about on the flight home.
For us, SeaWorld is exactly that kind of park.
A little wild.
A little educational.
A little wet.
And with more roller coasters than you might expect.

And that combination makes for a pretty great Florida day.
