There are some places you visit in Puerto Rico because they are beautiful. And then there are places where the experience itself becomes the memory.
Casa Cubuy was one of those places for us.
When we were planning our time in Puerto Rico, El Yunque was high on our list. We wanted to explore the trails, see the rainforest and, of course, find somewhere to cool off in the water. Rather than simply visiting for the day, we decided to stay overnight, which brought us to Casa Cubuy.
Tucked away in the mountains on the quieter side of El Yunque, Casa Cubuy is a small eco-lodge overlooking the Cubuy River. And it is worth knowing before you arrive: this isn’t a resort with a swimming pool. There are no rows of sun loungers, no big pool area and no feeling that you need to spend your day at the accommodation.
Instead, you have the river, natural swimming pools, hiking trails and the jungle right outside your door.
With kids, we actually loved that.
The setting immediately makes you feel like you’ve escaped somewhere. It is green, peaceful and surrounded by the sounds of the forest. At the same time, staying here does require a slightly different mindset than staying in a typical family hotel. You come here to be outside, explore and get a little bit adventurous.
So, if you’re travelling with children, pack accordingly. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, and definitely bring swimwear and clothes you don’t mind getting wet or a little muddy. The natural pools and trails are where you’ll spend much of your time, rather than sitting around the accommodation.
The trails from Casa Cubuy lead down towards the river, where we spent part of the day swimming in the natural pools and exploring the area. The kids didn’t need much convincing to get into the water. Before long, we were all climbing over rocks, cooling off and enjoying being right in the middle of El Yunque.
It was one of those moments where the kids weren’t asking for Wi-Fi, a television or an organised activity. They were simply happy exploring.
And that, for us, was one of the best things about staying here.
Casa Cubuy also feels quite remote, which is something worth keeping in mind when you’re travelling as a family. You don’t have shops and restaurants right outside the door, so it’s sensible to plan ahead and make sure you have what you need. But that little bit of distance from everything is also exactly what makes the stay special.
You aren’t staying beside a busy tourist attraction.
You’re actually surrounded by the place you came to experience.
But our favourite experience happened after dark.
Casa Cubuy offers different tours, including a jungle night walk, and we couldn’t resist joining one with the kids. Walking through El Yunque at night was completely different from seeing it during the day.
We had our flashlights and our guide, but it was mostly the sounds around us that caught our attention.
Especially the coquí frogs.
Their distinctive “ko-kee, ko-kee” call seemed to come from everywhere. You could hear them long before you managed to spot one hiding among the leaves.
Our guide knew exactly where to look, and slowly we started discovering frogs, insects that appeared to glow and other tiny creatures moving around in the darkness.
And then we saw the fireflies.
That was probably the highlight for the kids.
Tiny flashes of light appeared between the trees, disappeared and then popped up somewhere else. Every time someone spotted one, we all stopped to look.
It was very cool.
There was something almost surreal about standing there in the darkness with the kids, listening to the “ko-kee, ko-kee” of the frogs while little flashes of light appeared around us. It wasn’t an attraction with flashing lights or a big production. It was simply the jungle doing its thing, and we happened to be there to see it.
For the kids, it became one of those stories they kept talking about afterwards.
The next morning, we were treated to another Casa Cubuy highlight: breakfast.
And honestly, it was amazing.
Fresh fruit, pancakes, French toast — and whatever you fancied could be made for you on the spot. There was something lovely about sitting down for breakfast without having to rush anywhere, especially after the night we’d had.
We sat with our coffee while breakfast was being prepared, still talking about the night before. The kids were excitedly talking about the frogs and fireflies, and the whole morning felt relaxed.
It was exactly the kind of breakfast you want after a night in the jungle.
And it also made us realise that Casa Cubuy isn’t really about ticking off a list of hotel facilities. It’s about the whole experience.
You’re not booking it because you want a huge swimming pool, entertainment team or a resort where you never have to leave the property.
You’re booking it because you want something different.
You can walk down to the river, swim in the natural pools, explore the trails, join a night walk and wake up surrounded by the sounds of El Yunque. With children, that can be much more memorable than another standard hotel stay.
There are a few practical things we’d keep in mind when planning a family stay.
Bring proper footwear. The trails and river area aren’t somewhere you want to explore in flip-flops.
Bring swimwear and a change of clothes. If the kids see the river, chances are they’ll want to get in.
Don’t overplan your stay. Give yourself time to enjoy Casa Cubuy and the surrounding area instead of treating it as somewhere to sleep between a dozen other activities.
And if you want to join the jungle night walk, make sure you plan around it. For us, it was absolutely worth doing, and the kids loved having something completely different to look forward to after dark.
The remote setting is something else to embrace. This isn’t the place to stay if you want to step outside and immediately find lots of restaurants and entertainment. With children, a little planning goes a long way.
But honestly, we wouldn’t change that.
For us, Casa Cubuy gave us a completely different side of Puerto Rico.
We had already enjoyed beautiful beaches and warm Caribbean water, but here we were climbing through the forest, swimming in a river, listening to “ko-kee, ko-kee” and searching for fireflies with the kids.
And those are exactly the kind of travel memories that stick.
Looking back, staying at Casa Cubuy was much more than simply booking a night near El Yunque. It became part of our Puerto Rico experience itself.

Just go knowing what you’re booking. This isn’t a traditional resort and there isn’t a swimming pool waiting for you. Instead, there’s a river, natural swimming pools, hiking trails, an amazing breakfast, a jungle night walk and the chance to hear the little coquí frogs calling “ko-kee, ko-kee” in the darkness.
And if you’re lucky, you’ll see the fireflies too.
For us, that was far more memorable than a swimming pool could ever have been.
