When we started planning our Lapland adventure, there was one activity everyone in the family agreed on—we had to go on a husky safari. We had seen the photos, watched the videos, and imagined what it would be like. But nothing prepared us for the real experience.
It quickly became one of the highlights of our entire trip.
Meeting the Huskies
As we arrived at the husky farm, we could already hear them.
Not barking.
Not whining.
Just pure excitement.
Dozens of energetic Siberian Huskies couldn’t wait to run. These dogs absolutely love what they do, and their enthusiasm is contagious. The moment they were connected to the sleds, they were eager to get moving.
Before setting off, our guide explained how to steer, brake, and work together as a team. Don’t worry—you don’t need any previous experience. After a short briefing, you’ll be ready for your Arctic adventure.
Flying Through the Arctic Wilderness
The moment the brake was released, everything changed.
Within seconds, the noisy excitement disappeared into complete silence.
The only sounds were the runners gliding across the snow, the soft footsteps of the huskies, and nature all around us.
We travelled through snow-covered forests, across frozen lakes, and along winding trails surrounded by nothing but white landscapes.
It felt like stepping into another world.
One where time slows down and you simply enjoy the journey.
Why a Husky Safari Is Perfect for Families
One of the things we loved most was that this adventure is suitable for almost everyone.
Most tours allow one adult to drive while another sits comfortably in the sled with the children. Halfway through the journey, many operators offer the chance to switch drivers, so everyone gets the opportunity to experience steering the sled.
Children usually love every minute of the ride. Wrapped up in warm blankets, they enjoy the snowy scenery while the huskies do what they love most, running.
For our family, it wasn’t just an excursion. It became a memory we’ll talk about for years.
The Incredible Bond Between Mushers and Their Dogs
One thing that really stood out to us was the relationship between the mushers and their dogs.
These aren’t just working animals—they’re part of the family.
The guides knew every dog’s personality, strengths, and even their favourite spot in the team.
After the safari, we had time to meet the huskies, cuddle them, take photos, and learn more about how they’re cared for throughout the year.
Seeing how much the dogs enjoyed running made the experience even more special.
What Should You Wear?
Lapland temperatures can easily drop below -20°C, so dressing properly is essential.
Most safari companies provide thermal overalls, boots, gloves, and helmets, but wearing good base layers underneath will make your experience much more comfortable.
We recommend:
- Thermal base layers
- Warm fleece or wool mid-layer
- Thick wool socks
- Thin gloves under your winter gloves
- Hat or balaclava
- Neck warmer
- Sunglasses on bright snowy days

How Long Does a Husky Safari Last?
There are tours for every type of traveller.
Some last just one hour, while others take you deep into the wilderness for half a day or even several days.
For families visiting Lapland for the first time, we think a 2 to 3-hour safari offers the perfect balance between adventure and comfort.
It gives you enough time to experience the thrill of driving your own sled while still leaving plenty of energy for the rest of your Arctic adventures.
