There are moments while travelling that stay with you forever.
Not because they were planned.Not because they were expensive.
But because they made you stop, look up, and simply say…

For us, seeing the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland was exactly that moment.
After spending our days meeting reindeer, driving husky sleds through snowy forests, and playing in the endless white landscape, every evening ended with one question:

Will tonight be the night?

Why Finnish Lapland is One of the Best Places to See the Northern Lights

Finnish Lapland sits far above the Arctic Circle, making it one of the world’s best destinations to witness the magical Aurora Borealis.
From roughly September until early April, the skies regularly dance with shades of green, purple, and sometimes even pink.
Unlike many destinations, Lapland offers something extra:
The complete experience.
Imagine standing outside your cosy cabin surrounded by snow-covered trees. The only sounds are the crunch of snow beneath your boots and the distant silence of the Arctic wilderness.
Then suddenly…
The sky begins to move.
No photograph truly prepares you for that feeling.

Every Evening Became an Adventure

One of the most exciting parts of our trip was that the hunt for the Northern Lights became a family activity.
Every evening we’d check the aurora forecast.
Then we’d put on every warm layer we owned, grab our cameras, and head outside.
Sometimes we waited five minutes.
Sometimes two hours.
Sometimes… absolutely nothing happened.
But honestly?
Those evenings were just as magical.
Standing together beneath millions of stars, surrounded by untouched snow, with temperatures far below freezing somehow didn’t feel cold at all.
There was always hope.
And that made every evening exciting.

Then It Happened…

One evening, the sky suddenly changed.
A faint green ribbon appeared above the trees.
At first we wondered if we were imagining it.
But within minutes it grew brighter.
The green light stretched across the sky.
It danced.
It twisted.
It shimmered.
Our daughters stood completely still.
No phones.
No talking.
Just smiling.
It felt like nature had decided to put on its own private show.
It was one of those travel moments that no attraction, hotel, or excursion could ever compete with.
Pure magic.

Tips for Seeing the Northern Lights

Although no one can guarantee you’ll see the Aurora, a few simple tips greatly improve your chances.

Stay at least 4–5 nights

The weather changes quickly in Lapland. More nights simply mean more opportunities.

Escape artificial lights

Even a short walk away from villages or resorts can make a huge difference.

Check the forecast

Aurora forecast apps can indicate when solar activity is strongest, but remember that clear skies are just as important.

Be patient

The lights often appear unexpectedly.
Sometimes they’re visible for only a few minutes.
Sometimes they dance across the sky for over an hour.

Dress Warmer Than You Think

Waiting outside at -20°C feels very different from skiing at -20°C.
Layering is everything.
You’ll want:

  • Thermal base layers
  • Thick wool socks
  • Waterproof winter boots
  • Snow trousers
  • Warm gloves
  • A quality winter jacket
  • A hat that covers your ears

Capturing the Aurora

Seeing the Northern Lights with your own eyes is unforgettable. Photographing them can be tricky.
Most modern smartphones now include a night mode that performs surprisingly well, but if you’re bringing a camera, a tripod and longer exposure settings will give the best results. That said…
Don’t spend the entire evening looking through a screen.
Take a few photos.
Then simply enjoy the show.
Those memories will last far longer.

More Than Just the Aurora

While the Northern Lights were undoubtedly the highlight of our trip, Lapland offers so much more.
During our adventure we also:

  • Went on an unforgettable husky safari through snowy forests
  • Met Santa Claus at the Arctic Circle
  • Fed friendly reindeer
  • Explored snowy landscapes straight out of a fairytale
  • Enjoyed cosy evenings by the fire after days full of adventure

The beauty of Lapland is that even if the Northern Lights decide not to appear, you’ll still have an incredible holiday. And if they do appear…
You’ll never forget it.
