Our favourite European road trip destinations for families
There is something special about road trips with kids: snacks in the back seat, spontaneous stops, and the excitement of discovering a new place every day.
Over the years, we’ve done several road trips in Europe with our daughters, and these are our absolute favorites.
- Italy – Tuscany & beyond
Rolling hills, medieval towns, and endless gelato stops. Tuscany is one of the easiest and most rewarding road trip regions in Europe for families.
Highlights:
- Florence, Siena, and San Gimignano
- Easy driving distances
- Plenty of family-friendly agriturismos
- Croatia – coastal beauty
Driving along the Adriatic coast feels like one long postcard.
Highlights:
- Clear blue water everywhere
- Charming coastal towns like Split and Zadar
- Island hopping possibilities
- France – Provence
Lavender fields, markets, and small villages make Provence perfect for a relaxed road trip.
Highlights:
- Colorful markets
- Easy, scenic drives
- Lots of picnic stops
- Norway – nature at its best
For families who love nature, Norway is unforgettable.
Highlights:
- Fjords and dramatic landscapes
- Ferry crossings that feel like mini-adventures
- Endless outdoor activities
- Greece – island hopping
Road trips don’t always mean mainland. Greek islands are perfect for “mini road trips” with a rental car.
We especially loved:
Crete for its variety and driving routes
Rhodes for easy exploring and hidden beaches
Our road trip essentials
After many trips, we’ve learned that organization makes everything easier — especially with kids.
That’s why we never travel without packing cubes. Each child gets their own set, and it keeps everything from swimwear to outfits perfectly organized.
